Default Planetoids/circular panoramics

Kinda cool, neat and different.... was asked by deanfx on HoFo to post this here.

To create these is fairly simple....

1. Go out and take some pictures which will be used to create a 360 degree panoramic. When doing so, make sure that the lower 25% of the image captures the ground/pavement, etc. Avoid capture somebody's leg or something in there, though things like a tree might make for interesting results. I wasn't planning on making a planetoid with the shots from Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto, hence I got people's legs originating from the centre.
2. Create a 360 panoramic, make sure it's level. I used Photoshop for this one since autostich couldn't create a perfect 360 panoramic (it doesn't have that feature). Even with PS, I had to fix it to get that perfect leveled panoramic. PTGui I read can create these panoramics.
3. Resize the panoramic to a square.
4. Rotate image by 180 degrees.
5. In Photoshop - Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinate. GIMP should have something similar.
6. Use Rectangular to Polar, click Ok.
7. Do any post-processing work you deem necessary.

For an inverted effect where the sky is in the centre of the image, don't rotate the image.

Flickr's got a lot of other great examples....

Thank you for providing this information, Tanner.

I'm headed out to grab some shots now. I was curious about a fisheye lens also. One is not needed, correct?

I did this one in gimp with a script of some sort under gimp 2.2. I haven't tried it with gimp 2.4 to see what happens. Guess I need to look into finding the updated script for 2.4.

The fisheye is not need. You don't even need to take a pano, just crop in reasonably.

I never tried making a panoramic with a fisheye lens, but I suspect the software will try and correct the distortion when you make the panoramic, but if that's the only wide angle lens you have, who knows, it might work.

I just used a 17-40L lens for this, with it zoomed in a bit to remove some of the barrel distortion.

If i can find a damn store here with the nikon fisheye lens in stock, i will try it out.

Since its suppose to be a true 180 degree shot, id only have to stick two shots together, i dthink.

You might want to add that it works best with small resolution picture as very big one will use all of your memories.

Unless I am wrong, try to polarize this quickie 360.

right click>save target as...

My cs3 always ran out of memory while rendering it.

Chimp, I have been meaning to ask...how did you get a circular crop like that? Is it just a square pic with a white back?

Thanks twitch, I think it's going to take a lot more practice to get the outcome I truly want.
